State to open TVET institute at former Mama Ngina Girls' High School grounds
Mvita MP Mohamed Soud Machele hailed the development as a significant stride towards providing accessible vocational education opportunities to the community.
The government will open a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institute at the former Mama Ngina Girls' High School grounds in Mvita Sub-county, Mombasa County, as the school has been relocated to Shanzu.
Mvita Member of Parliament Mohamed Soud Machele hailed the development as a significant stride towards providing accessible vocational education opportunities to the community and unlocking skills development and economic empowerment via both employment and entrepreneurship.
“We did a public participation exercise last year, and you all agreed on the need to establish a TVET institute. I raised the same with President William Ruto during his coastal tour, and later we went to State House, where the Education PS was instructed to kick-start the process. We are in the process of registration,” Machele said during the distribution of bursary checks worth Sh44 million.
The MP also noted that secondary schools in Mwita were crowded amid financial constraints and the underutilization of education infrastructure, hence the need to renovate existing schools rather than construct new ones.
“In Mvita, we have 16 secondary schools and about 26 to 28 primary schools, which are enough,” he said.
Regarding youth unemployment, Machele asked parents to take responsibility for their children's education and support initiatives that promote vocational training.
He told them to encourage their children to pursue vocational education, as technical skills are in high demand both locally and internationally, providing numerous employment opportunities and fostering economic growth in the region.
“We understand the economy is not friendly currently, but parents, let us support and push our children to pursue education," he said.
"These days, you cannot be employed anywhere without a B+,” he said while urging students to concentrate on their studies so they can excel in their national exams.
Machele thanked the President for permitting the use of the former Mama Ngina school grounds for vocational training and assured that the focus would be on equipping the youth with practical skills relevant to the job market.
Earlier this year, the Mama Ngina school was moved from Kizingo to Shanzu on the North Coast, as part of a Sh200 million project. The school now sits on a 20-acre plot of land opposite Shimo La Tewa Secondary School, the only other national school in Mombasa County.
